Lagos, a hidden gem along Portugal’s Algarve coast, instantly won me over with its rugged cliffs and crystal-clear waters. It felt like stepping into a dream postcard, where beauty and history merged at every sight. Despite its popularity, Lagos maintained its charming vibe, making it the perfect spot for my Portuguese escape.
During my three days in Lagos, I only scratched the surface of its wonders. The town seamlessly combined exploration and relaxation, catering to all types of travelers, whether you’re a family, couple, or solo adventurer. From leisurely walks along cobblestone streets to exciting hikes, Lagos offered a variety of experiences. Immersed in its rich history and vibrant culture, every corner told a story.

Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is about a 30-minute drive from Lagos, a must-do activity for nature lovers visiting the area. This iconic 12-kilometer trail offers dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and panoramic views of the stunning Algarve coastline. Even if you don’t complete the entire hike, the views alone make it worthwhile. Completing the trail rewards you with a breathtaking view of the Benagil Cave from above. I would recommend making it a day trip while you visit Lagos.
I visited Lagos on my 7-day Portugal trip and only discovered this trail through a recommendation from my Airbnb host. Since it wasn’t part of my original plan, I didn’t have time to visit, but I’ll definitely return to Lagos to enjoy this iconic activity!

Accessing Lagos Beaches via the Boardwalk
Lagos boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, and many of them are easily accessible via the scenic boardwalk. This makes beach hopping a breeze and allows you to soak in stunning coastal views as you stroll from one beach to another.
During my visit to Lagos, I started at Praia do Camilo. The descent down the wooden staircase to this small but picturesque beach was well worth it. The crystal-clear waters were perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
From Praia do Camilo, I walked to Ponta da Piedade, known for its dramatic cliffs and stunning rock formations. The views from here are spectacular, especially at sunset, making it a great place for photos.

Tips for Visiting Beaches: Pack some snacks and plenty of water to keep hydrated. Additionally you will appreciate yourself bring a cover-up to prevent sunburn. Last but not least, sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!
Enjoy the the food with locals
A cozy family-owned restaurant in Lagos, offering a delightful mix of traditional Portuguese cuisine and international flavors. Be sure to try their signature dishes, Cataplana (Portuguese Fish Stew) which showcase the freshest local ingredients and authentic flavors of the Algarve region.
I found it by accident on Google Maps, and it became my top spot in Lagos. Serving the best Seafood Rice I’ve had while visiting Portugal, it’s a gem not to be missed. However, do note that it’s only available on Sundays.
A local bakery offering high-quality pastries sold at cheap prices. I recommend to get some freshly baked bread as breakfast paired with the best coffee from the coffee shop next door.
Nestled in the heart of Lagos, Black and White Coffee Shop is a charming café known for its friendly service and excellent coffee. I literally visited the place every morning while staying in Lagos. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely brunch or grab a refreshing latte before heading to the beach.
Exploring Lagos Old Town
Lagos Old Town is a charming area filled with historic streets, picturesque squares, and a rich cultural heritage. As you stroll through its cobblestone streets, you’ll discover local shops offering unique souvenirs and locally made pottery. Discovering Local Crafts at the Weekend Market
The weekend market in Lagos is a lively place full of handmade crafts and unique items. While browsing, I found a vendor selling cute handmade accessories. I ended up getting a necklace and an ankle bracelet for myself, and I absolutely love them! It was so fun to discover these treasures in the bustling atmosphere of the market.

Another option is to travel by train, with Lagos being a stop on the Algarve line. The train journey offers scenic views of the Portuguese countryside and is a comfortable way to travel from cities like Lisbon and Faro.
By rental car
For those driving to Lagos, the town is well-connected by highways and main roads. From Lisbon, it’s about a 3-hour drive south along the A2 and A22 highways. Parking is available in Lagos, although it can be limited in the town center during peak seasons.
By bus from Lisbon (Recommend)
Additionally, buses operate regular routes to Lagos, taking 3-4 hours with a short stop for restroom. These are convenient and affordable option for travelers who prefer not to drive. From Lisbon, travelers can catch a bus at the Sete Rios or Oriente bus stations.
How I travel to Lagos
I opted for the bus as it was the most convenient and budget-friendly choice. Getting to Oriente bus station by metro was easy, although it took me a while to locate the platform for our bus. Once in Lagos, I loved that you can walk everywhere, making it super convenient, even without a car. Plus, if you’re not a fan of walking under the sun, Uber is always an affordable alternative.
The best time to visit Lagos
Lagos is a stunning destination that can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences and interests. The peak tourist season in Lagos typically falls between June and August when the weather is warm and sunny, making it ideal for beach activities and outdoor adventures. However, this is also the busiest time of year, with larger crowds and higher prices for accommodations and activities.
For those seeking a quieter and more budget-friendly experience, consider visiting Lagos during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and fall (September to October). During these months, the weather is still pleasant, and the beaches are less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed and peaceful vacation experience. Additionally, prices for accommodations and activities tend to be lower during these times.
