Kayaking Through Hidden Caves
Kayaking along the stunning coastline of Lagos is an absolute must for any traveler seeking adventure and breathtaking views. It’s the perfect way to discover hidden caves and secret beaches that are inaccessible by land. Whether you’re a seasoned kayaker or a newbie, there are options for everyone – you can rent a kayak and explore at your own pace or join a guided tour for an unforgettable experience.
I highly recommend the guided tour option, especially for beginners, as the local guides provide valuable insights and ensure your safety throughout the journey. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to embark on a 2-hour guided kayak tour to Ponta da Piedade – it’s an experience you’ll cherish forever!
Personal Tip: Book an early morning tour for serene conditions and fewer crowds.
Hiking the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is about a 30-minute drive from Lagos, a must-do activity for nature lovers visiting the area. This iconic 12-kilometer trail offers dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and panoramic views of the stunning Algarve coastline. Even if you don’t complete the entire hike, the views alone make it worthwhile. Completing the trail rewards you with a breathtaking view of the Benagil Cave from above. I would recommend making it a day trip while you visit Lagos.
I visited Lagos on my 7-day Portugal trip and only discovered this trail through a recommendation from my Airbnb host. Since it wasn’t part of my original plan, I didn’t have time to visit, but I’ll definitely return to Lagos to enjoy this iconic activity!
According to other travelers’ experiences, if you plan to visit by car, parking is available at Marinha Beach, but spaces fill up quickly. Arriving early, ideally before 10 am, is a good idea to secure a spot and make the most of your adventure.
Personal Tip: Pack plenty of water and plan a picnic along the trail for a romantic twist.
Visit the iconic Benagil Cave
Benagil Cave is one of the Algarve’s most famous natural landmarks and a must-visit spot when in Lagos. This stunning sea cave, with its iconic skylight and hidden beach, is truly a sight to behold. Located about 30 minutes from Lagos, it’s easily accessible by boat or kayak.
Personal Tip: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and fully appreciate the cave’s beauty.
Accessing Lagos Beaches via the Boardwalk
Lagos boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, and many of them are easily accessible via the scenic boardwalk. This makes beach hopping a breeze and allows you to soak in stunning coastal views as you stroll from one beach to another.
During my visit to Lagos, I started at Praia do Camilo. The descent down the wooden staircase to this small but picturesque beach was well worth it. The crystal-clear waters were perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
From Praia do Camilo, I walked to Ponta da Piedade, known for its dramatic cliffs and stunning rock formations. The views from here are spectacular, especially at sunset, making it a great place for photos.
Personal tip: For those in search of a stunning sunset, this is the best spot to be! Pack some snacks, find a cozy spot, and enjoy the moment. Watching the sun go down from here was the highlight of my trip to Lagos.
Walking along the boardwalk, I discovered other beautiful beaches, like Praia Dona Ana with its golden sands and clear turquoise waters. The cliffs surrounding the beach provide a dramatic backdrop and offer some shade during the hotter parts of the day.
Exploring these beaches via the boardwalk not only gives you easy access to each spot but also treats you to some of the best views in Lagos.
Tips for Visiting Beaches: Pack some snacks and plenty of water to keep hydrated. Additionally you will appreciate yourself bring a cover-up to prevent sunburn. Last but not least, sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

Another option is to travel by train, with Lagos being a stop on the Algarve line. The train journey offers scenic views of the Portuguese countryside and is a comfortable way to travel from cities like Lisbon and Faro.

For those driving to Lagos, the town is well-connected by highways and main roads. From Lisbon, it’s about a 3-hour drive south along the A2 and A22 highways. Parking is available in Lagos, although it can be limited in the town center during peak seasons.
By bus from Lisbon (Recommend)
Additionally, buses operate regular routes to Lagos, taking 3-4 hours with a short stop for restroom. These are convenient and affordable option for travelers who prefer not to drive. From Lisbon, travelers can catch a bus at the Sete Rios or Oriente bus stations.
How I travel to Lagos
I opted for the bus as it was the most convenient and budget-friendly choice. Getting to Oriente bus station by metro was easy, although it took me a while to locate the platform for our bus. Lagos is a stunning destination that can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences and interests. However, this is also the busiest time of year, with larger crowds and higher prices for accommodations and activities.

During these months, the weather is still pleasant, and the beaches are less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed and peaceful vacation experience. Additionally, prices for accommodations and activities tend to be lower during these times.
